Florida pest season calendar

Florida's warmth keeps pests active most of the year, but a few have clear peak windows worth planning around. These are keyed to University of Florida research, not a marketing calendar.

• Subterranean termites

  Peak window: winter through spring

  Native eastern subterranean termites tend to swarm from around December through April, so a cloud of winged insects indoors in that window is worth a prompt inspection.

• Drywood termites

  Peak window: spring into the rainy season

  West Indian drywood termites become active around April and with the start of the rainy season, dropping wings near windows and lights inside the home.

• Mosquitoes

  Peak window: warm, wet months

  Florida deals with mosquitoes for much of the year, with the heaviest activity during the warm and rainy months. Standing water around the home is the driver you can control.

• Lovebugs

  Peak window: late April through May, again late August through September

  Lovebugs appear in heavy pairs for a few weeks twice a year. They are a nuisance rather than a household pest, so this is about timing outdoor plans, not treatment.
