How to Get Rid of Ants (Indoors and Out)

By The PestPin Team 5 min readUpdated Jun 28, 2026

Ants march in for two reasons: food and water. Cut off both and disrupt their trail, and most invasions stop. Here's the playbook.

Step 1: Erase the scent trail

Ants follow pheromone trails. Wipe counters and entry paths with a vinegar-water solution to break the trail, not just a regular cleaner.

Step 2: Use bait, not just spray

Spraying kills the ants you see but leaves the colony. Ant baits let workers carry poison back to the nest, which is what actually ends the problem.

Step 3: Seal and dry

  • Caulk gaps around windows, doors, and pipes.
  • Fix leaks and wipe up standing water.
  • Store sweet and greasy foods in sealed containers.

Sawdust piles or rustling in walls may mean carpenter ants, which tunnel into wood. Those need a pro, DIY rarely reaches the nest.

Frequently asked questions

Why do ants keep coming back?

Usually because the colony is intact and a scent trail or food source remains. Bait reaches the nest; cleaning trails and sealing entries prevents new scouts.

Are carpenter ants dangerous to my house?

They don't eat wood like termites, but they tunnel through it to nest and can weaken structures over time. Treat them promptly.
